Bengaluru, Nov 6 (NationPress) Union Minister for Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs Pralhad Joshi has called on the Siddaramaiah-led Karnataka government to act with accountability and engage in discussions with sugarcane farmers regarding their demands.

During a press briefing at the BJP state headquarters, Jagannath Bhavan in Bengaluru, he stated: “The state government, along with certain ministers and the Chief Minister, has been making declarations concerning sugarcane pricing. The Central government sets the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) before each crushing season begins. Currently, we have established the FRP at Rs 350 per quintal.

He noted that in the past, following the initiation of ethanol procurement, payments were often delayed by three to four years.

“At present, 97.2% of payments for the last sugar season have already been disbursed. The state government is urged to engage in discussions with factory owners and farmers to arrive at a just resolution. They should refrain from exacerbating the situation with reckless statements,” he remarked.

The Union Minister also mentioned that sugar mill proprietors have sought clearance for exports.

“We project a surplus of approximately 15–20 lakh tonnes of sugar, and we plan to permit the export of about 15 lakh tonnes,” he revealed. “Additionally, they have requested permission to export molasses, which we have already granted,” he added.

“Farmers are demanding Rs 3,500 per tonne, while the Centre has set the FRP at Rs 350 and has also approved exports. The state government must address the valid concerns of farmers. The Chief Minister and ministers need to intervene to resolve the matter. Wasting time is unacceptable,” he emphasized.

“It is unbecoming of a state government to squander time with political rhetoric,” Joshi commented.

He continued: “Previously, ethanol blending reached 35 lakh metric tonnes — about 20%. Due to this, sugar mills have attained considerable stability. The government is obligated to negotiate and settle this issue. It is undesirable for farmers to protest on the streets,” he stated.

“When Karnataka ministers previously approached us regarding issues, we addressed them. We raised the FRP from Rs 340 to Rs 350. Hence, no time should be wasted — do not allow farmers to remain on the streets,” he urged.

Responding to a query, he stated: “If the Chief Minister has convened a meeting, that’s commendable. He should engage in discussions to resolve the issue,” he insisted.

Farmers in the northern region of Karnataka have been protesting for more than a week, demanding that factories set the purchase price of sugarcane at Rs 3,500 per tonne. The BJP state unit has expressed support for the protests.

Farmers’ organizations have set a deadline until 7 p.m. on Thursday (Nov 6) for a decision, warning that they will begin blocking national highways starting Friday (Nov 7).

Point of View

It's crucial to recognize the gravity of the situation in Karnataka. The ongoing protests by farmers highlight significant economic concerns that need addressing. While the government's response is vital, the dialogue must be constructive, ensuring the farmers' voices are heard. Balancing economic interests with farmers' rights is essential for sustainable agricultural policies.
