Karnataka Government's Proposed Land Seizure Threatens Mysore Silk Brand, Alleges Ashoka
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, March 4 (NationPress) R. Ashoka, the Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, has accused the Karnataka government of attempting to seize land owned by the Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation (KSIC) at its T. Narasipura facility. He asserted that this action poses a serious threat to the future of the renowned Mysore Silk brand.
Ashoka's statement claims the state is looking to acquire a five-acre plot designated for the expansion of the KSIC unit in T. Narasipura, intending to repurpose it for a taluq stadium, despite objections highlighted in an internal technical report.
He pointed out that the Managing Director of KSIC had previously submitted a comprehensive report indicating that this land is crucial for the corporation’s future growth plans, which include the establishment of an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) and an increase in production capacity. This report was substantiated by operational data and necessary infrastructure assessments.
Ashoka criticized the government for disregarding expert recommendations and questioned the reasoning behind the proposed land acquisition. He expressed concerns about the motives behind weakening a profitable public sector enterprise and whose interests are truly being served.
He also highlighted the potential repercussions on the operations of the T. Narasipura facility, which relies on nearly five lakh litres of water daily for silk reeling. Officials warned that the proposed construction could disrupt crucial pipeline infrastructure, thereby impacting production.
Moreover, Ashoka emphasized that hundreds of workers and thousands of sericulture farmers depend on this unit for their livelihoods.
He noted that regulations stipulate that at least 30% of industrial land must be preserved as a green zone. He claimed that reducing the land area could lead to regulatory violations and possible operational shutdowns.
Describing Mysore Silk as a GI-tagged heritage brand founded during the reign of the Mysore Wodeyars and recognized globally for its quality, Ashoka urged the government to prioritize strengthening and modernizing KSIC instead of undermining it.
He called on the state government to retract its proposal and protect the future of KSIC and Mysore Silk. Ashoka has escalated the issue to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), Union Textile Minister Giriraj Singh, and Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal.
