Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) on Monday, 25 May pledged that a returning BRS government would deliver round-the-clock safe drinking water to every household in Hyderabad. The promise was made at a party cadre meeting in Kukatpally, where KTR drew a direct parallel with the BRS government's earlier achievement of providing uninterrupted 24-hour electricity supply across Telangana.

The Core Promise

KTR invoked the record of former Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR), arguing that the same political will that ended Telangana's chronic power shortages would now be channelled into a 24/7 drinking water programme for Hyderabad. 'The person who gave a 24-hour power supply to Telangana is KCR, and the person who will provide a 24-hour drinking water supply to Hyderabad is also KCR,' he declared. KTR added that he would personally take responsibility for the programme's implementation once BRS returns to power.

Historical Context: From Scarcity to Supply

KTR recalled the conditions that prevailed before Telangana's formation in 2014, describing decades of severe power cuts and drinking water scarcity under what he characterised as prolonged Congress rule in the undivided state. He cited Mission Bhagiratha — the BRS-era scheme to extend piped drinking water to households across the state — as evidence of the party's delivery credentials. The BRS, he argued, had already transformed the state's infrastructure once and was prepared to do so again.

Attack on the Congress Government

Turning to the incumbent administration, KTR launched a pointed attack on Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, alleging that the Congress government had failed to spend even a single additional rupee on Hyderabad's development in nearly two-and-a-half years in office. He accused Congress leaders of inaugurating flyovers, hospitals, and infrastructure projects built under the previous BRS regime while falsely presenting them as their own achievements.

KTR also alleged that Congress had broken promises made during the Assembly elections — including enhanced pensions and monthly financial assistance for women — without delivering on any of them.

The Double-Bedroom Housing Challenge

In one of the sharper moments of the address, KTR challenged the Congress government to demonstrate that it had constructed even a single double-bedroom housing unit in Hyderabad during its tenure. He declared he would retire from politics if the government could prove otherwise — a rhetorical challenge that underlines the BRS's bid to reclaim its urban development record as a campaign asset.
