Shimla, Nov 11 (NationPress) The Governor of Himachal Pradesh, Shiv Pratap Shukla, officially opened a four-day International Lavi fair on Tuesday in Rampur town, located approximately 130 kilometers from Shimla. This fair, revered for centuries, is one of the oldest events dedicated to fostering trade and commercial connections with Tibet.

During his address, the Governor emphasized that the Lavi fair is not just a commercial event but also a vital cultural event that symbolizes the rich traditions of the state.

He stated, "This historic gathering, deeply embedded in our cultural identity, celebrates not only trade but also a lively festival that fosters tradition, community, and cultural interactions."

Among the highlights of the fair are Kinnauri shawls, handicrafts, carpets, and dried fruits. The origins of the fair trace back to the 17th century when Raja Kehari Singh of Rampur Bushahr entered into an agreement to enhance trade between Tibet and Bushahr.

Reflecting on the legacy of the late former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, the Governor noted that it was during his tenure that the fair achieved international prominence.

He remarked, "Previously, the Lavi fair was organized through mutual understanding among traders and local communities, but now it embodies the collective spirit and unity of our people."

Governor Shukla commended the organizers for showcasing Himachal Pradesh's vibrant cultural heritage, highlighting performances from artists across various districts.

He mentioned that such festivals serve as a platform to promote traditional arts, music, and crafts, helping to preserve the customs and values that unite families and communities.

"Our traditions are crucial in linking generations, and events like the Lavi fair ensure that this legacy is handed down to the younger generation," the Governor expressed.

Addressing the rising issue of drug abuse, he urged for collective action to combat this menace. He acknowledged the police's efforts in tackling illegal drug trade, stressing the need for strong community involvement to effectively eradicate this social evil.

"We must unite against the forces of addiction, like chitta, that are destroying families," he asserted.

The Governor also highlighted the significance of environmental conservation, stating, "Protecting the environment is essential for the security and prosperity of Himachal."

He expressed sorrow over the recent explosion in Delhi, offering prayers for the quick recovery of those injured.

Governor Shukla appreciated the district administration and organizing committee for preserving the traditional essence of the Lavi fair while introducing new attractions.

He concluded by noting that the exhibition of local crafts, woolen goods, and dried fruits not only showcases the cultural richness of Himachal Pradesh but also provides valuable marketing opportunities for artisans and farmers.
