Prayagraj, March 26 (NationPress) The ongoing strike by lawyers at the Allahabad High Court protesting the transfer of Justice Yashwant Varma from the Delhi High Court to the Allahabad High Court has now reached its second day. The protest, spearheaded by the Allahabad High Court Bar Association (AHCBA), has intensified amid allegations of a cash scandal involving Justice Varma.
The uproar began when a significant amount of unaccounted cash was reportedly found at Justice Varma's home in Delhi during the Holi festival. This revelation has ignited fury within the legal community, prompting lawyers to call for the immediate cancellation of his transfer.
A large gathering of lawyers assembled near Gate No. 3 of the Allahabad High Court on Wednesday, chanting slogans and firmly opposing Justice Varma's appointment.
The protesting lawyers have entirely boycotted judicial activities, leading to a disruption of regular court functions.
In a statement to IANS, AHCBA Secretary Vikrant Pandey emphasized the association's unwavering position, declaring, "We are resolute that until our request to remove Justice Varma is fulfilled, we will persist with our strike. Our campaign against corruption will not relent."
He added that the association has called upon other Bar Associations across Uttar Pradesh to join their cause and refrain from judicial work.
"Many Bar Associations have already shown their support, and we anticipate more will join us. This transcends local concerns; it is a battle to maintain the integrity of the judiciary," Pandey informed IANS.
The AHCBA is also demanding that the Chief Justice of India (CJI) initiate impeachment proceedings against Justice Varma.
The lawyers' protest has caused significant disruptions to court sessions, impacting case hearings and inconveniencing litigants.
The Supreme Court has established a three-member committee to investigate the cash discovery at Justice Varma's residence.
Following the cash recovery reports, the Supreme Court Collegium suggested transferring Justice Varma back to the Allahabad High Court, his original institution.
However, the Allahabad Bar Association has opposed this decision and is calling for action regarding the matter.
