Gurugram, March 30 (NationPress) In a groundbreaking effort to enhance access to justice for underserved communities, Justice Sanjiv Berry of the Punjab & Haryana High Court inaugurated three pivotal legal aid initiatives on Sunday. These initiatives include the 'Nyay Setu Legal Aid Bridge for Prisoners', 'Sangini Prisons Legal Aid Clinic for Women Inmates', and 'Divyang Nyay Sahayata Kendra' under the auspices of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) at the District Jail Gurugram.
During the unveiling of these initiatives, the Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority revealed that Justice Sanjiv Berry, accompanied by Subhas Mehla, the District & Sessions Judge of Gurugram, visited the District Jail to engage with inmates, gaining insights into their legal challenges and obstacles in accessing justice.
The highlight of the launch was the Nyay Setu Legal Aid Bridge for Prisoners, a concentrated two-month legal aid campaign aimed at closing the gap between inmates and the justice system through a systematic, data-oriented approach.
“This initiative features dedicated legal aid teams conducting individual interviews with prisoners, pinpointing cases for bail or appeals, preparing legal documents, and ensuring effective coordination with the High Court and Supreme Court Legal Services Committees for robust legal representation,” he stated.
The second initiative, the Sangini Prisons Legal Aid Clinic for Women Inmates, has been set up in the female ward of the jail. It guarantees confidential, gender-sensitive legal support, facilitated by a dedicated female paralegal volunteer and regular visits from women advocates.
Additionally, the Divyang Nyay Sahayata Kendra, which will operate at the District Court Complex, serves as a comprehensive support center for Persons with Disabilities. It offers wheelchair assistance, legal counsel, and guidance on court procedures to promote accessible and inclusive justice.
“These initiatives represent a crucial advancement in fulfilling the essence of Article 39A of the Constitution and fortifying the legal aid infrastructure in Gurugram,” he concluded.
