Kolkata, Oct 30 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of attempting to link all suicide cases in the state to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
In a statement on his official X account, Amit Malviya, the BJP's Information Technology Cell Chief and central observer for West Bengal, asserted that following Mamata Banerjee's “brazen falsehoods” in connecting the suicide of 57-year-old Pradeep Kar at Panihati in North 24 Parganas with the NRC, she is now attempting to associate the suicide of 95-year-old Khitish Majumdar in Illambazar, Birbhum with the NRC and SIR.
Malviya questioned why a man born in 1930, who has lived as an Indian citizen all his life, would take such a drastic step due to SIR.
“Even if, by some reasoning, he was not an Indian citizen post-Partition and migrated to India later, he would have been eligible for Indian citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), due to his Hindu faith. The reality is, it is not SIR but Mamata Banerjee's corrupt and deteriorating administration that bears responsibility,” Malviya remarked.
The situation surrounding Majumdar's suicide has become more perplexing given that Illambazar is a stronghold of the Trinamool Congress, where local leaders are known for their harassment, according to Malviya.
He suggested there could be possibilities of Trinamool Congress members manipulating Majumdar with fear and misinformation or hindering him from applying for citizenship under the CAA, especially since the ruling party has previously stated that the CAA would never be enforced in West Bengal.
“If Mamata Banerjee insists on fabricating narratives to instill fear and obstruct SIR, she should at least make them coherent. Her current narrative is simply a desperate, hollow charade aimed at securing electoral gains while insulting the intelligence of the people of Bengal and undermining the essence of democracy,” Malviya stated.
Earlier on Thursday, after Majumdar's suicide was reported, Chief Minister Banerjee took to social media to assert that the recent wave of suicides and attempts in West Bengal, stemming from fear of SIR and the potential NRC, exemplify the tragic repercussions of the BJP's politics centered on fear, division, and hatred.
Malviya has pledged that if the BJP comes to power in West Bengal following the 2026 Assembly elections, a thorough investigation into all such suicides would be conducted, ensuring that every wrongdoer linked to the current ruling party is brought to justice.
