Kolkata, Oct 30 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, expressed her concerns on Thursday regarding the alarming rise in suicides and suicide attempts within the state, attributed to the perceived threat posed by the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and the potential implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC). She labeled these tragedies as direct outcomes of the BJP's fear-mongering and divisive tactics.
This statement follows the heartbreaking case of a 95-year-old resident from the West Midnapore district, who reportedly took his own life due to the apprehension of being removed from the voters' list because of the SIR.
Khitish Majumdar, hailing from West Midnapore, ended his life at a relative's home in the Birbhum district, motivated by the fear of losing his voting rights and, consequently, his citizenship.
"In just 72 hours since the Election Commission announced the SIR exercise in Bengal, which was pushed through by the BJP, multiple tragedies have unfolded. For instance, on October 27, Pradeep Kar, a 57-year-old from Panihati in Khardaha, died by suicide, leaving behind a note claiming, 'NRC is responsible for my death.' Just a day later, a 63-year-old man from Dinhata in Cooch Behar attempted suicide, consumed by fear of being targeted under the SIR process. Today, we mourn the loss of 95-year-old Khitish Majumder from Kotwali in Paschim Medinipur, who succumbed to his fears about land dispossession," the Chief Minister remarked in a social media update.
She challenged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to take responsibility for these distressing events.
"Will the BJP and its allies, who have allowed this climate of fear to flourish, find the courage to speak out?" she questioned.
According to Banerjee, the incidents, which include two suicides and one suicide attempt, signify not merely personal tragedies but a grave betrayal of humanity.
In her address, the Chief Minister urged the citizens of West Bengal to remain calm and not to react impulsively in light of these distressing events.
"I urge every resident: Stay calm, keep your faith intact, and avoid taking drastic measures. Our Maa-Mati-Manush Sarkar stands with you. We will not permit the NRC to take root in Bengal—neither overtly nor covertly. We will protect every legitimate citizen from being labeled an 'outsider,'" she assured.
"We are committed to defending the rights of our people against the BJP's harmful agenda aimed at fracturing our social unity, even if it takes the last drop of our blood," she concluded.
