Coimbatore, March 7 (NationPress) A local court has imposed a life sentence on three individuals for their involvement in the gang rape of a 20-year-old college student near the Coimbatore International Airport in November 2025.
The ruling was made by Mahila Court (in-charge) Judge V. Sundararaj, who determined that the defendants were guilty based on several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The individuals convicted include T. Karuppasamy, also known as Satheesh (30), his sibling T. Kaleeswaran, referred to as Karthik (21), both hailing from Singampunari in Sivaganga district, along with their relative M. Guna, known as Thavasi (20) from Madurai district.
All three received life imprisonment under Section 70(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which specifically addresses gang rape.
This legal provision stipulates a minimum rigorous imprisonment of 20 years, potentially extending to the entirety of the convict's natural life, and includes a monetary fine. In addition to the gang rape charge, the court found the trio guilty under seven other sections of the BNS that pertain to assault, criminal intimidation, and related offenses.
The accused were brought before the court around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, during which the judge declared their guilt and delivered the sentence.
The prosecution detailed that the incident transpired during the night of November 2 and 3, 2025.
The survivor, a college student aged 20, was inside a vehicle with her 25-year-old boyfriend in an open space along a dirt road connecting Brindhavan Nagar and SIHS Colony, situated near the Coimbatore International Airport.
According to the chargesheet, the three assailants approached the couple, assaulted the young man, and forcibly dragged the woman to a secluded area where they gang-raped her before escaping. Following the assault, the survivor's boyfriend reported the incident to the Peelamedu police station, leading to the prompt arrest of the accused.
This case has sparked considerable public outrage in the area, resulting in strong calls for immediate justice.
The investigation was conducted by Inspector S. Latha with support from Inspector R. Arjunkumar, the Station House Officer at Peelamedu police station.
Public Prosecutor B. Jisha, representing the State, stated that the court instructed the Tamil Nadu government to provide compensation to the victims.
The survivor is set to receive Rs 7 lakh as compensation, and her boyfriend, who was also attacked during the incident and subsequently filed the complaint, will be awarded Rs 2 lakh.
