Ranchi, Feb 5 (NationPress) A specialized CBI court in Ranchi has handed down life sentences to three individuals for the 2022 murder of 17-year-old Rupesh Pandey, an incident that ignited significant public outrage and communal strife across Jharkhand.

The individuals convicted are Mohammad Aslam Ansari, also known as Pappu Mian, Mohammad Gufran, and Mohammad Kaif. They have been sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 10,000 each.

The court specified that any failure to pay the fines would result in further penalties. Following their sentencing, the three were remanded to judicial custody.

On February 2, the court found these three guilty after considering the final arguments from both the prosecution and defense teams. In contrast, two other suspects, Mohammad Irfan and Istakhar Mian, were acquitted due to a lack of evidence linking them to the crime.

This case originated in the Barhi police station area of Hazaribagh district. On the evening of February 6, 2022, Rupesh had accompanied his uncle to view the Saraswati Puja immersion parade.

The prosecution claimed that a mob, allegedly led by Ansari, cornered Rupesh at the immersion site, resulting in a severe assault that ultimately caused his death.

This incident incited widespread protests and heightened tensions throughout various districts in Jharkhand.

Initially, 27 individuals were implicated in the FIR filed at the Barhi police station. However, after the investigation, the local police only charged five individuals.

In pursuit of justice, Rupesh’s mother appealed to the Jharkhand High Court, questioning the thoroughness of the investigation. Recognizing the gravity of the claims, the High Court mandated a CBI investigation.

The CBI then took charge of the case, conducting a new inquiry, and the trial was held in a designated special CBI court in Ranchi.

During the proceedings, Special Public Prosecutor Priyanshu Singh represented the prosecution, arguing the case on behalf of the CBI.
