Kolkata, Oct 7 (NationPress) Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has requested an immediate report from the West Bengal government regarding the violent attack on BJP Lok Sabha member Khagen Murmu.
This announcement was made by Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju while addressing reporters in Siliguri, located in North Bengal, on Tuesday.
"The attack on the MP and MLA highlights the atmosphere that the Trinamool Congress has fostered here. This is regrettable. The Lok Sabha Speaker has issued a notice, and the West Bengal government is expected to provide a report. Only after receiving the details can we discuss the necessary actions," said Union Minister Rijiju.
The Union Minister arrived in North Bengal earlier today to assess the destruction caused by severe rainfall and landslides. He plans to visit various landslide-affected areas in the Darjeeling hills.
"This issue transcends MPs and MLAs; it is crucial to guarantee the safety of every citizen. India has laws, and if someone takes the law into their own hands and launches an attack, then appropriate measures must be taken," he emphasized.
On Monday, the Union Minister criticized the Trinamool Congress for promoting a state of chaos in Bengal. "The savage attack on BJP MP Khagen Murmu, a respected tribal leader and two-time MP from North Malda, is appalling. He was en route to Nagrakata for relief work following severe rains, floods, and landslides. I'm traveling to North West Bengal to evaluate the extensive damage caused by the heavy rains," he stated in a post on X.
BJP Maldaha Uttar MP Khagen Murmu and MLA Shankar Ghosh faced a brutal assault from miscreants while heading to assist the people affected by the landslides in North Bengal and to distribute relief supplies.
While Ghosh suffered minor injuries, the two-time BJP MP sustained serious facial and head injuries.
This incident transpired in Nagrakata, located in the Jalpaiguri district of North Bengal.
The BJP MP was promptly taken to a primary health center for medical attention. Currently, he is receiving treatment at a hospital in Siliguri, and his condition is stable.
Reports indicate that Murmu has a fracture below his left eye and will require surgery. He is currently in the ICU of a private hospital in Siliguri, but it remains undecided whether the surgery will occur there or at AIIMS in Delhi. Given the fracture, doctors are investigating any potential damage to the eyeball or surrounding areas. West Bengal Governor C.V. Anand Bose has already visited the injured MP in the hospital.
The BJP lodged a complaint against eight individuals at Nagrakata Police Station in the Jalpaiguri district on Monday night and organized a protest outside the station demanding action against the perpetrators. However, no arrests have been made thus far in connection with this incident.
