Kolkata, Oct 7 (NationPress) West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose has demanded that the state police take decisive action within 24 hours against those responsible for the attack on a BJP Lok Sabha member and a party legislator, reportedly carried out by activists of the Trinamool Congress.

The Governor issued a stern warning, stating that failure to act within the specified time would compel him to intervene as per constitutional norms.

The incident involved the vehicle of BJP Lok Sabha member Khagen Murmu and the party’s Chief Whip in the West Bengal Assembly, Shankar Ghosh, who were allegedly assaulted by Trinamool Congress supporters in Bamundanga, Jalpaiguri, while they were en route to Nagrakata to deliver relief items to individuals impacted by rain and landslides.

Murmu sustained severe injuries and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Siliguri, located in the Darjeeling district. On Tuesday afternoon, the Governor visited the hospital to check on Murmu's health and, while speaking to reporters, reiterated his demand for police action.

“The performance of the police is under scrutiny in this situation. They must adhere to constitutional mandates. If no action is taken against the offenders by the police, I will pursue necessary measures according to constitutional provisions,” the Governor stated.

He expressed concern over such violent acts against elected officials, calling them distressing in a state like West Bengal. “The integrity of our democratic system is jeopardized by such attacks on elected representatives. This incident is tragically detrimental to a state like West Bengal and undermines democracy,” he added.

As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the attack on Murmu and Ghosh, even after the 24-hour deadline.

“On Monday night, the BJP lodged a complaint against eight individuals at the Nagrakata Police Station in Jalpaiguri and protested outside the station, demanding accountability. The police have stated that they are currently investigating the matter.
