Can New Delhi Rely on France for the Rafale Deal and What’s Next for ‘Make in India’?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 19 (NationPress) French President Emmanuel Macron stated on Thursday during an exclusive IANS interview that just as with the successful Tata Airbus collaboration, India can rely on France for the substantial Rafale deal -- and potentially submarines in the future – with the ‘Make in India’ initiative at the heart of this expanding partnership.
Speaking on the sidelines of the India AI Impact Summit 2026, Macron expressed a desire to enhance cooperation in maintenance capabilities and diversify approaches further.
“The partnership with India is clearly advancing, and we are establishing a new domain of collaboration,” he highlighted.
Macron mentioned, “We are actively increasing local components, a vital aspect of our ongoing discussions between French companies and your government.”
“I find it hard to understand any criticisms of this, as it fortifies your nation, deepens our strategic ties, and generates more employment opportunities here,” he underscored.
He also extended an invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit France in June. “PM Modi will be the distinguished guest of G7 as the BRICS President,” Macron informed IANS.
“We share a remarkable global strategic partnership that is exceptional for both India and France. Regarding the Rafale, our goal is to broaden our collaboration. India recently affirmed its intent to order a new batch of Rafale jets, totaling 114, and to engage in co-production,” Macron elaborated.
He welcomed the recent Indian clearance for 114 Rafale fighter jets, emphasizing that a majority will be ‘Made in India’.
“Thus, the Rafale is crucial. I anticipate we can achieve similar progress with submarines. We are providing additional capabilities, including in engines and helicopters, through collaborations between Tata and Airbus,” he informed.
Recently, Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) launched India’s inaugural private-sector helicopter Final Assembly Line for the Airbus H125 in Vemagal, Karnataka. This facility was opened virtually by PM Modi and Macron.
“We are initiating fresh efforts in innovation, culture, creative industries, and research. Hence, our relationship is robust,” he concluded.
