The accolade was conferred by Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal during a ceremony at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. Representing the state, Ruhi Khan, Deputy Secretary of the Department of Industries, Commerce and Investment Promotion Policy, was the recipient of this prestigious award.
State Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, currently in Spain to promote Madhya Pradesh's potential, expressed his joy, stating, “I am thrilled to announce that Madhya Pradesh has secured the second position among all states and union territories for the National ODOP Award 2024 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. I dedicate this honor to the farmers, artisans, and artists whose efforts made this achievement possible at the national level.”
This recognition underscores Madhya Pradesh’s successful implementation of the ODOP scheme, which aims to promote district-specific products through branding, job creation, and support for rural and urban entrepreneurship. The initiative has facilitated local products in transitioning from regional markets to global arenas, nurturing a robust network of grassroots exporters and artisans.
Under the ODOP scheme, several products from Madhya Pradesh have been awarded Geographical Indication (GI) tags, enhancing their international demand. Notable examples include Chanderi sarees, Bagh prints, Kadaknath chicken, Chinour rice, and Ratlami sev. This scheme has significantly raised the profile of agricultural and handicraft items, improving the livelihoods of producers statewide. Districts such as Burhanpur, Raisen, and Balaghat have emerged as vital contributors, with their high-quality bananas, aromatic basmati rice, and Chinour rice gaining both national and international acclaim. The state’s endeavors have established these products as symbols of economic advancement and export capability.
ODOP Walls showcasing Madhya Pradesh’s products have been set up in global cities including Singapore, New York, Vancouver, Milan, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Japan. The retail availability in outlets like Mustafa Centre and Centre Point Mall in Singapore further exemplifies the scheme’s success in connecting with international consumers.
The ODOP initiative spans all districts of Madhya Pradesh, covering a wide range of items such as green vegetables, coarse grains, handlooms, handicrafts, and artisanal tools. Among the 19 GI-tagged products from the state, seven are part of the ODOP framework.
From April 1 to June 11, 2024, the National Awards Portal received a total of 641 applications for the ODOP Awards, comprising 587 from districts, 31 from states and union territories, and 23 from Indian missions abroad. Madhya Pradesh’s silver award reflects its rising prominence in the global marketplace.
