Chennai, March 14 (NationPress) In a significant advancement for southern Tamil Nadu, the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation has officially designated Madurai Airport as an international airport, responding to a long-standing request from both the Tamil Nadu government and the local populace.

This decision follows the Union Cabinet's endorsement on March 10 to elevate the airport's classification, enabling enhanced international air connectivity from the culturally rich city.

During the announcement, Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu stated that this upgrade would greatly enhance air travel links between Madurai and worldwide destinations, while reinforcing the city's position as a key center for education, healthcare, tourism, and commerce in southern Tamil Nadu.

"The recognition of Madurai Airport as an international facility will unlock new avenues for global connectivity and economic expansion. Multiple airlines have already shown interest in increasing their international services from this airport," the minister noted.

Madurai is one of India's oldest continuously inhabited cities and holds the title of the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu. The city draws millions of visitors both domestically and internationally each year, especially pilgrims who come to explore its famous temples and sacred sites.

As per an official statement from the Civil Aviation Ministry, the elevation of the airport's status is expected to enhance regional connectivity, foster tourism and trade, and stimulate economic growth across the southern districts of Tamil Nadu.

The government also highlighted that Madurai's burgeoning industrial landscape and its growing reputation as a center for education and healthcare position it well to capitalize on improved international air connections.

This new international designation is anticipated to facilitate direct flights to various destinations in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and other regions experiencing high travel demand from Tamil Nadu. Enhanced connectivity could also attract foreign investments and increase the export capacity of industries in and around Madurai.

Officials emphasized that the airport's new international status will streamline access for international pilgrims and tourists to prominent religious landmarks in the region, including the renowned Meenakshi Amman Temple, Koodal Azhagar Temple, Tiruparankundram Murugan Temple, Palamudhircholai Murugan Temple, and the sacred site of Rameswaram.

This development has been met with enthusiasm from local businesses, tourism stakeholders, and political figures, all of whom believe that international recognition for Madurai Airport will expedite economic growth and enhance the region's global connectivity.
