Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 10 (NationPress) The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has officially sanctioned the transformation of Madurai Airport in Tamil Nadu into an international airport. Situated in the historic Temple City, Madurai Airport is among the earliest airports in the state.
This airport serves as a vital entry point to southern Tamil Nadu, significantly enhancing tourism and pilgrimage, which are crucial for the region's economic development, as noted in a Cabinet report.
According to the Cabinet, "Upgrading Madurai Airport to an international designation will improve regional connectivity, stimulate trade, and foster economic growth. The airport's capacity to draw international pilgrims and businesses is in line with the city's rich historical significance."
The government envisions establishing 350 airports by 2047. Currently, India operates 164 airports and plans to incorporate around 200 more by that year, as stated by Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu. He emphasized that the focus is not merely on building airports but on ensuring more aircraft operations within India.
Naidu mentioned that India is poised to advance in civil aviation by developing a robust manufacturing ecosystem. He articulated that this ecosystem will cater not only to rising domestic demands over the next decade or two but will also position India as a hub for global exports.
He highlighted the remarkable growth in civil aviation, noting that in the past decade, India has doubled its number of airports, increased passenger numbers, and expanded its aircraft fleet, attributing this growth to the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Modi and the impactful reforms introduced in the civil aviation sector, particularly the UDAN scheme.
The minister assured that the Civil Aviation Ministry is dedicated to supporting all partners looking to collaborate with India in the aviation manufacturing sector.
