Mumbai, Aug 18 (NationPress) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis conducted a review of the rainfall conditions across the state at the State Emergency Operation Centre in Mantralaya, urging all agencies to maintain a state of alert.
Accompanied by Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan and Information Technology Minister Ashish Shelar, CM Fadnavis reported that seven lives have been lost in various incidents over the past two days due to the intense rains and resulting flash floods.
Some rivers in the Konkan region have surpassed danger levels, causing significant damage in Jalgaon.
The Chief Minister indicated that the government is actively communicating with the Karnataka government about water levels at the Almatti dam and its water discharge. Although no immediate threat exists, he has directed the administration to stay vigilant. The situation in Mukhed from the Nanded district is stable, with special focus on Vishnupuri.
Approximately 800 villages within the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division have been impacted. The administration is particularly alert in South Gadchiroli. Normalcy is returning in Akola, Chandur Railway, Mehkar, and Washim.
Initial assessments indicate that crop damage has occurred across 2 lakh hectares in Vidarbha.
“Mumbai has experienced 170 mm of rain in a mere eight hours since the morning. Some areas have faced traffic disruptions due to waterlogging, though railways, metro, and other transport services are functioning smoothly. The next 10 to 12 hours are critical for Mumbai,” stated the Chief Minister.
He also mentioned that local administrations and municipalities have been empowered to declare school holidays, taking tomorrow's weather forecast into consideration.
During the meeting, Divisional Commissioners provided updates on rainfall in their respective divisions. Districts like Ratnagiri, Raigad, and Hingoli have reported higher rainfall, with the Meteorological Department predicting continued heavy rainfall from August 17 to 21.
As a result, the Chief Minister has instructed the administration to remain vigilant over the coming days, as per the government release.
He urged citizens to include the precise time in their SMS alerts, take these alerts seriously, and prioritize their safety. He clarified that there is no need to reach out to Mantralaya for urgent assistance, as local authorities have been granted necessary funds and powers.
The administration has been directed to assist with housing collapses and to conduct thorough assessments. Additionally, he called for constant communication with neighboring states before river danger levels escalate.
Moreover, the Chief Minister instructed the police to stay alert, particularly in tourist areas, and emphasized the need for government readiness in landslide-prone regions, ensuring adequate food, clean water, and clothing at shelter centers.
