Mumbai, June 30 (NationPress) The Maharashtra government presented a bill on Monday to create the 16-member Gadchiroli District Mining Authority, aimed at ensuring effective coordination and oversight for the swift development of mineral-rich regions and the implementation of relevant plans and projects.
The authority will be led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also serves as the guardian minister for Gadchiroli district. This initiative is significant as it aims to eradicate Left Wing Extremism (LWE) and transform Gadchiroli into India's next steel city.
The district is rich in minerals like iron ore, hematite, magnetite, BHQ, limestone, dolomites, and coal, which are essential raw materials for numerous manufacturing sectors.
The bill highlights that Gadchiroli, abundant in iron ore, has the potential to emerge as a significant center for mineral-based industries, particularly the steel sector.
Currently, the lack of an integrated administrative structure hinders the prompt execution of mining projects. Therefore, the establishment of a cohesive authority, comprising various ministers and secretaries from relevant departments under the Chief Minister's leadership, is necessary to facilitate mining approvals and promote the growth of mineral-based sectors such as steel and cement, thus accelerating the comprehensive development of Gadchiroli district and the state as a whole.
This authority will act as a catalyst in expediting the operationalization of approved mining leases, generating employment opportunities in the district and increasing state revenue.
The bill states that the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957, along with its associated rules, governs the management and regulation of mines and minerals. Major mineral blocks are auctioned under the Mineral (Auction) Rules, 2015, and mining concession holders must secure various clearances and no-objection certificates from different departments and local authorities within the stipulated timelines.
If a bidder fails to comply with the timeline, the allocated major mineral blocks will be re-auctioned.
During an industry conference last week, the Chief Minister remarked, “Ten years ago, Gadchiroli was an industrial desert. No one imagined it could become an industrial hub. Thanks to numerous policies, Gadchiroli is on its way to becoming a new steel city of India, projected to produce one-third of the nation’s steel, transforming the district's landscape.”
