Mumbai, July 15 (NationPress) The Maharashtra Assembly experienced significant disruption on Tuesday as members engaged in a heated exchange regarding the redevelopment of slums located on Defence land in Bandra East.

The commotion began when Shiv Sena (UBT) Legislator Varun Sardesai raised a Calling Attention Motion, alleging that there were delays in the redevelopment of 9,483 slums covering 42 acres of Defence land within his constituency. He pressed for a timeline on when the redevelopment would be finalized.

In response, Minister Shambhuraj Desai stated that he preferred not to delve deeper into the matter due to an incomplete briefing.

“I must honestly state that from 2019 to 2022, the prior state government led by Uddhav Thackeray did not follow up on this issue even once with the Central government. However, after Eknath Shinde took office as Chief Minister, we sent four letters to the Centre,” he asserted, repeatedly questioning, “What actions did you take? Don’t embarrass us. What did you do?”

Legislators Aaditya Thackeray and Sardesai from Shiv Sena (UBT) took exception to Minister Desai’s comments.

Aaditya Thackeray accused the minister of misleading the assembly, which escalated the chaos.

Minister Desai retorted, “I stated that there was no follow-up from 2019 to 2022. If I didn’t name anyone, why are you so upset?”

In response, Shiv Sena (UBT) Legislator Bhaskar Jadhav questioned why Desai was addressing matters of the Urban Development Department and accused him of lacking proper information.

Minister Gulabrao Patil defended Desai, stating, “The Opposition poses questions, and we respond. If they are dissatisfied, discussions can ensue. However, it is inappropriate to shame the government by claiming that the ministers lacked information. Are you inherently wise?”

Patil adopted an assertive stance, declaring, “We can also speak more than you.”

Following this, a significant uproar ensued as MLAs from both factions advanced.

BJP member Atul Bhatkhalkar supported Desai, asserting that he had provided a positive response, promising to convene a meeting shortly concerning the slum redevelopment.

As the uproar persisted, Presiding Officer Samir Kunawar adjourned the assembly for ten minutes.

Upon reconvening, Speaker Rahul Narvekar indicated that he had previously ruled on Desai's responses related to the Urban Development Department, led by Deputy CM Eknath Shinde.

He also informed the assembly that he had already authorized this arrangement. The normal proceedings then resumed.

Point of View

It’s essential to view this incident as a reflection of ongoing political tensions in Maharashtra. The debate over the redevelopment of slums is not merely about infrastructure; it symbolizes the broader issues of governance, accountability, and the urgent need for comprehensive urban planning. The discourse must focus on constructive solutions rather than political theatrics.
