Mumbai, July 18 (NationPress) Ganeshotsav, a festival that boasts a rich heritage spanning over a century in Maharashtra, has now been designated as a ‘Rajya Mahotsav’ (State Festival). Starting this year, the Maharashtra government will actively engage in the festivities and implement initiatives aimed at enhancing the festival's visibility on both national and international stages.
The comprehensive plan for this endeavor was unveiled on Friday during a session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly by the Minister of Cultural Affairs, Ashish Shelar.
In his address to the assembly, Minister Shelar remarked, “Maharashtra is a region abundant in art, culture, and tradition. It is privileged to carry the legacy of saints, social reformers, visionary leaders, warriors, and spiritual thinkers, all contributing to an inclusive heritage. This sacred Deccan land has been intellectually vibrant and socially cohesive, laying the groundwork for the state’s economic, social, and cultural advancement. Ganeshotsav has been pivotal in nurturing this unity. The long-standing practice of domestic Ganesh celebrations, combined with the public Ganeshotsav culture, stands as a proud emblem of Maharashtra’s cultural and social harmony.”
“It is essential for the world to recognize the social and cultural importance of Ganeshotsav. The time has arrived to merge our traditions with modernity, bolster this culturally significant platform, rally all stakeholders, promote tourism, safeguard our rich customs, and firmly establish Maharashtra on the global stage. To this end, the Government of Maharashtra has resolved to commemorate Ganeshotsav as a State Festival, while anchoring the celebrations across the state's diverse geographical and cultural landscape.”
“To preserve the festival's traditional essence while integrating modern elements, and to ensure every citizen of the state feels connected to the celebrations, it is imperative to declare Ganeshotsav as a state festival. The Government of Maharashtra will assume a facilitative and supportive role in this initiative.”
He further stated that a dedicated logo for the State Festival of Ganeshotsav will be introduced, and statewide cultural programs showcasing Maharashtra’s rich artistic, cultural, and traditional heritage will be organized not only within Maharashtra but also in areas with substantial Marathi populations outside the state and even internationally. A series of lectures on the significance of Ganeshotsav and a special Spiritual Theatre Festival will also be conducted during this period.
