Mumbai, July 10 (NationPress) The age-old custom of Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav has now been officially recognized as the 'State Festival of Maharashtra', as announced by the state’s Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday.

During his address in the Legislative Assembly, Minister Shelar remarked, “The inception of Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav in Maharashtra dates back to 1893, initiated by Lokmanya Tilak. The true spirit of this festival embodies social unity, nationalism, and pride in our language. This noble tradition thrives even today. Ganeshotsav transcends mere celebration; it stands as a testament to Maharashtra’s cultural pride and identity.”

As per the minister, the Maharashtra government is dedicated to safeguarding, promoting, and celebrating the cultural heritage of Ganeshotsav throughout the state and the nation.

“Despite attempts by certain individuals to disrupt this long-standing public tradition through court petitions, I wish to acknowledge that under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, the Mahayuti government acted promptly to eliminate all such obstacles,” he stated.

He highlighted that during the previous administration, restrictions were placed on traditional POP (Plaster of Paris) idols, citing CPCB guidelines without providing feasible alternatives.

“In contrast, our department has taken a more balanced approach. We launched a comprehensive study to explore eco-friendly alternatives and assess the environmental impact of POP. An in-depth analysis was conducted by the Kakodkar Committee under the Rajiv Gandhi Science Commission. Following this, Union Minister Bhupender Yadav approved the findings, allowing for the lift of previous restrictions. The production, display, and sale of POP idols are now permitted as per the court’s ruling,” he said.

“The Mahayuti government has adopted a clear and proactive approach to Ganeshotsav. Whether it's police security, infrastructure support, or financial aid for grand celebrations in cities like Pune, Mumbai, and beyond, the Maharashtra government will cover the necessary expenses,” the minister added.

“Celebrating Ganeshotsav with full vigor is not just a tradition but a fundamental belief of the Mahayuti government. I urge all Ganpati Mandals to incorporate themes in their festivities that honor our armed forces, showcase social initiatives, highlight the nation's developmental achievements, and pay homage to our esteemed leaders in their decorations. This Ganeshotsav should reflect social awareness, environmental stewardship, and the joy of celebration. It brings me immense pride to declare Ganeshotsav as the 'State Festival of Maharashtra',” Minister Shelar concluded.

Point of View

I believe that recognizing Ganeshotsav as Maharashtra's State Festival is a significant step towards honoring our cultural diversity and traditions. It's a progressive move that aligns with the values of unity and respect for our heritage.
