How is Maharashtra Cyber Department Tackling Fake News Amid India-Pak Tensions?

Mumbai, May 10 (NationPress) – The Office of the Additional Director General of Police, Maharashtra Cyber Department, has issued an urgent advisory cautioning against the spread of fake news during times of escalating cross-border tensions, urging citizens to practice caution and restraint.

"Disseminating false information, whether intentional or not, is a legally punishable act. Maharashtra Cyber strongly encourages all individuals to be discerning and judicious while consuming and sharing information, especially regarding national issues. The Government of India provides official channels and verified platforms to communicate updates, statements, and press releases concerning national security and defense. Citizens are strongly advised to depend solely on these legitimate sources and to refrain from sharing unverified messages, videos, or images that could exacerbate social tensions or misinformation," stated the advisory.

The department has called on everyone to act responsibly, validate facts from credible sources, and report any suspicious or misleading content promptly.

"Considering the current cross-border tensions, accurate and timely updates regarding developments at the border and surrounding areas are crucial for the public. However, Maharashtra Cyber has noted with concern the rise of fake news amid the crucial information being circulated across various digital platforms. This misinformation not only misleads the populace but also fosters confusion and unrest in society," the advisory added.

"A significant portion of this false content relates to purported military movements, strategic operations, or retaliatory actions from neighboring nations. Such unverified and misleading narratives pose a severe threat to national security and might fuel the escalation of tensions. Unscrupulous individuals seem to be exploiting the situation's sensitivity by creating and distributing fake news to gain followers, incite panic, or manipulate public perception," warned the advisory.

In response to these alarming trends, Maharashtra Cyber has issued numerous notices for the removal of such misleading content across social media and communication platforms. The department is committed to ensuring a secure and reliable information environment, continuing to collaborate with platform operators and enforcement agencies to combat the spread of misinformation.

The advisory follows a day after Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde alerted that the government would take strict measures against those spreading fake news on social media.

CM Fadnavis, during a meeting he chaired to assess security arrangements and preparedness amid the rising conflict between India and Pakistan, urged the administration to thoroughly review the central government's 'Union War Book' and disseminate relevant information.

Police cyber units in every district are tasked with monitoring social media and identifying accounts that are aiding Pakistan and taking necessary actions against them. "Anyone assisting the enemy or disseminating false information will face action," he emphasized during the meeting.

Furthermore, Eknath Shinde remarked, "Disseminating fake news on social media is a serious crime. We will enforce strict actions against it. We urge the public not to film, video, or broadcast any military and coast guard preparations, as this is crucial for security reasons."

He announced that the government will implement stringent measures against individuals involved in the distribution of fake news on social media.
