Mumbai, April 10 (NationPress) In a determined effort to tackle escalating air pollution across the state, the Maharashtra government has enacted a significant amendment to the Motor Vehicle Tax Act. Through the Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Tax (Amendment) Bill 2026, which received approval during the Assembly session, the Environment (Green) Tax applied to older vehicles has significantly increased.

As per the updated rates, the tax on older and polluting vehicles has almost doubled, a change anticipated to have a considerable financial impact on vehicle owners.

The state government has publicly announced the revised tax framework following the amendment to the Motor Vehicle Tax Act, which was ratified in the state legislature during the budget session. After obtaining the Governor's approval, the updated Act has been released in the official gazette.

Under the new regulations, the tax will be applied every five years after a vehicle reaches 15 years since its initial registration. The tax amount will be based on the vehicle type and its emission standards. While this alteration is likely to impose a financial strain on older vehicle owners, officials assert it will promote a shift toward environmentally-friendly and newer models.

A senior representative from the Transport Department commented that these reforms are crucial in addressing the state's declining air quality and will be executed promptly.

The new tax rates are determined based on the fuel type and Bharat Stage (BS) compliance. For Two-Wheelers, those meeting BS-VI or higher standards will incur a fee of Rs 2,000, while those at BS-IV or lower will face Rs 4,000. For Petrol Four-Wheelers, the tax for BS-VI or above is Rs 3,000, and for BS-IV or below, it is Rs 6,000. Diesel Vehicles meeting BS-VI or above will be taxed at Rs 3,500, while those at BS-IV or lower will be charged Rs 7,000.

In alignment with the 'Maharashtra Electric Vehicle Policy 2025,' the state government has introduced a new requirement for infrastructure. It will now be mandatory for future residential and commercial housing societies to implement electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities for their residents and occupants.

Recognizing the increase in respiratory ailments and health issues stemming from petrol and diesel emissions, the state government is actively advocating for the production and utilization of electric vehicles to protect the environment.

As a compelling incentive, the government has declared a full toll exemption for electric vehicles at all toll plazas across the state, including the Atal Setu.

Point of View

The Maharashtra government's decision to raise taxes on older vehicles reflects growing concerns about air quality. While the financial burden on vehicle owners is considerable, the initiative aims to promote a healthier environment and a transition to electric vehicles, which is a positive step forward in combating pollution.
