Mumbai, Aug 19 (NationPress) Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis presided over a cabinet subcommittee on infrastructure on Tuesday, where significant decisions were made regarding the construction of third and fourth tracks on the Pune-Lonavala suburban railway line, the acquisition of 268 new AC trains for Mumbai under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP), the development of an elevated road linking Thane and the Navi Mumbai International Airport, the Metro Line 11 initiative, and the establishment of a new city in Nagpur.

These initiatives aim to enhance the transport system and usher in a fresh wave of development for the cities of Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Nagpur, as highlighted in the government release.

“Today's meeting resulted in the approval of the construction of the third and fourth tracks on the Pune-Lonavala suburban railway line. This development will enhance the efficiency of the Pune-Lonavala corridor, providing essential connectivity for industrial, residential, and commercial growth in the region. It will also help alleviate the rising traffic congestion in Pune city. Additionally, the establishment of two new stations, Balajinagar-Bibwewadi and Swargate-Katraj, has been approved under Phase I of the Pune Metro,” stated the Chief Minister.

To modernize the suburban railway service, the cabinet has authorized the procurement of new trains under Phases 3 and 3A of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Plan (MUTP). In the first phase, 268 fully AC trains will be acquired, featuring closed doors and high-quality amenities akin to those of the metro system. The older doorless trains will be gradually retired and replaced with these modern units, according to CM Fadnavis.

He reassured that there would be no increase in ticket prices following the transition to AC trains. The acquisition of these trains will commence once approved by the Central Government.

The cabinet subcommittee also approved the construction of a 25-km elevated road connecting Thane to the Navi Mumbai International Airport, which will facilitate rapid and dedicated transit routes to Thane, Navi Mumbai, and surrounding industrial locations.

“The ambitious Metro Line 11 project in Mumbai has received approval. A 16-km underground line will be constructed from Wadala Depot to the Gateway of India. This metro will connect significant places such as Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Chowk and Hornimal Circle. The project is estimated to cost around Rs 24,000 crore, with funding provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). This line will significantly ease transportation issues for Mumbaikars,” the Chief Minister noted.

Moreover, a commercial complex will be constructed through a joint development project with BEST, generating additional income for the organization.

The cabinet subcommittee also approved a new development corridor in Nagpur. Fadnavis announced that the establishment of a new ring road and a new city in Nagpur has been granted the green light.
