Maharashtra Government to Reclaim 4,849 Acres of Unused Farmland for Farmers

Mumbai, Jan 2 (NationPress) The Maharashtra Cabinet, under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has taken a significant step by approving adjustments to section 220 of the Maharashtra Land Revenue Code, 1966. This decision enables the return of nearly 4,849 acres of unused farmland back to farmers.
These parcels of land were auctioned off due to outstanding government dues and subsequently seized by the government.
According to section 220 of the Maharashtra Land Revenue Code, 1966, lands may be auctioned and held by the government due to non-payment of taxes or similar debts. The law allows for such lands to be returned to the original owners if the owed amount and associated interest are settled within a period of 12 years. However, there was previously no provision for returning these lands to the rightful owners after this 12-year period had elapsed,” stated the announcement from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO).
With the Cabinet's endorsement of the amendments to section 220, these lands can now be returned to the original account holders or their heirs upon the payment of 25 percent of the current market value.
The proposed Bill will be presented during the forthcoming Budget session of the State Legislature.
Additionally, Chief Minister Fadnavis instructed the administration to implement artificial intelligence solutions to enhance access for citizens and government personnel visiting the Mantralaya, ensuring a seamless experience while maintaining robust security.
During a meeting that assessed the current security measures at the Mantralaya, where citizens from all over the state gather to address their concerns with ministers and officials, the Chief Minister noted an increasing number of visitors, which has been straining the existing security staff.
He called for the administration to issue security passes that would grant access to both the Mantralaya and Vidhan Bhavan, especially during legislative sessions.
The Chief Minister mentioned that the construction of the subway connecting Mantralaya to Vidhan Bhavan is in progress, and access routes should be made available in this subway for officials and employees heading to Vidhan Bhavan.
He also urged the administration to expedite the installation of security nets on every floor of the Mantralaya, following recent events where visitors attempted to stage protests by jumping from nearby floors.
Furthermore, he directed a comprehensive inspection of visitors' belongings at the entrance of the Mantralaya to ensure that no prohibited items are brought inside.
