Mumbai, May 20 (NationPress) Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday honored the esteemed astronomer, science communicator, and Maharashtra Bhushan awardee Dr Jayant Narlikar, recognizing his significant impact on making science accessible through his literary contributions.

In a heartfelt condolence message posted on X, CM Fadnavis remarked, “The news of the passing of our senior astronomer and science communicator Dr Jayant Narlikar is profoundly heartbreaking. He was instrumental in promoting scientific literacy by crafting rich literature on scientific topics. His efforts earned him numerous global accolades. For decades, he conducted groundbreaking research in astrophysics, simplifying complex subjects like astronomy for the everyday reader in an engaging way.”

He further stated, “Beyond his contributions to various publications, Dr Narlikar amassed an extensive collection of scientific literature. His writings in Marathi were particularly beloved by readers throughout Maharashtra. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan and held key positions in several international organizations.”

“We have lost not only a remarkable scientist but also a gifted author. I extend my sincere tribute to him. The state government has chosen to grant him a state funeral. We share the sorrow with his family. Om Shanti,” he added.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also conveyed his condolences, stating, “The loss of Padma Vibhushan Dr Jayant Narlikar -- a world-renowned astronomer and a thoughtful interpreter of the relationship between humanity, the cosmos, and science -- is a profound loss for Maharashtra. His distinctive and clear writing style brought scientific knowledge to the public and positioned him as a key figure in the region’s scientific heritage.”

“Motivated by an unquenchable curiosity about not only Earth but the universe at large, Dr Narlikar dedicated his life to scientific inquiry and outreach. As a visionary in science and technology, he played a crucial role in shaping Maharashtra’s educational framework. Through the international university he founded in Pune, he significantly raised the state's profile in the global scientific arena. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations,” Shinde remarked.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar also expressed sorrow over Dr Narlikar’s passing, describing it as an “irreparable loss to the nation.”

“Honored with the Maharashtra Bhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan, Dr Narlikar was a monumental figure in Indian science. Upholding his mission to foster scientific thinking and rationality -- especially among the youth -- would be a fitting tribute to his memory,” Pawar stated.

He added, “As a pioneering astronomer, Dr Narlikar elevated India’s reputation in the global scientific community. He committed his life to nurturing scientific curiosity in young minds and demystifying complex concepts for children. With his departure, a brilliant star in India’s scientific landscape has dimmed.”

Highlighting his institutional legacy, Pawar noted, “Dr Narlikar founded the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), which has emerged as a beacon of scientific excellence. Internationally respected for his research on the origin and evolution of the universe, his ‘Quasi-Steady State Theory’ remains a landmark in cosmology. His bold stance against superstition -- particularly during his presidential address at the Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan -- will always be remembered.”
