Mumbai, May 26 (NationPress) In light of the India Meteorological Department's prediction of substantial rainfall affecting Mumbai, Konkan, and Western Maharashtra, Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has urged the administration to stay vigilant and initiate relief operations.
He specifically emphasized the need for relief efforts in districts such as Pune, Satara, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Thane, and Palghar, which have been grappling with heavy rainfall and flooding over the past two days.
According to a press release from Deputy CM Shinde’s office, he has been actively monitoring conditions in Thane and other areas experiencing significant rainfall, engaging in discussions with disaster management officials.
“The districts of Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Pune, and Nashik are currently facing the most intense rainfall in the state. The state government is vigilantly overseeing the situation, implementing all necessary measures to safeguard citizens,” the release stated.
Shinde instructed the administration to take prompt and effective actions to ensure that the rainfall does not disrupt daily life or lead to any loss of life or property.
“All systems should be prepared, and relief and rescue operations must be executed swiftly as needed. Special attention should be given to waterlogged roads, the status of bridges, and electrical transmission lines. The administration must also be cautious regarding dilapidated and hazardous structures. Continuous monitoring is essential to ensure that suburban rail services remain uninterrupted in areas like Mumbai and Thane, to avoid inconveniencing passengers,” the release added.
Deputy CM Shinde has urged the administration to adhere strictly to the advisories issued by the IMD, encouraging those residing in low-lying regions to exercise utmost caution. He assured citizens of the administration's readiness to assist while urging cooperation for an efficient relief process.
These directives from the Deputy CM follow a forecast from the Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai, predicting heavy rain across Mumbai, Konkan, and western Maharashtra, along with alerts for several districts.
A red alert has been issued for Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Raigad district, while Thane and Palghar are under an orange alert. A yellow alert is in effect for Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Kolhapur, Satara, Pune, and Nashik districts. The IMD has advised residents in these areas to take necessary precautions.
“A generally cloudy sky with a chance of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, and gusty winds (40-50 km/h) is expected, along with heavy rainfall at isolated locations within the city and its suburbs. Thunderstorms with lightning and intense downpours, featuring gusty winds reaching 50-60 km/h, are highly probable in various districts of Mumbai over the next 3-4 hours. Residents are advised to exercise caution while venturing outdoors,” the IMD stated in its advisory.
