Mumbai, July 11 (NationPress) Maharashtra State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare emphasized the importance of thorough preparations for the forthcoming municipal elections, stating that electronic voting machines must be inspected and primed for the electoral process.

During a virtual meeting with the Divisional Commissioners and Municipal Commissioners to discuss early preparations for the upcoming municipal elections, Waghmare highlighted the necessity for vigilance concerning the elections involving all 29 Municipal Corporations in the state. He urged that this proactive approach would prevent last-minute chaos.

“Consideration must be given to the availability of voters, voting centers, functioning electronic voting machines, and sufficient manpower at every level,” he stated. “Following the initial inspection of the voting machines, we can assess the required quantity. The Divisional Commissioners should act as coordinators and regularly review this with all Municipal Commissioners. By collaborating with all relevant parties and organizing our efforts, we can facilitate the elections in a free, fearless, and transparent manner,” he added.

Suresh Kakani, Secretary of the State Election Commission, indicated that the precise number of polling stations can be established with the total voter count in mind. This will streamline further planning. Once the precise polling station count is determined, it will also guide the planning for electronic voting machine needs. The manpower requirements will also be assessed, he noted.

Previously, Waghmare had instructed that the voter list for the legislative assembly, reflecting names registered as of July 1, 2025, would serve for these elections, and all preparations should be synchronized accordingly. This is pivotal as preparations for local body elections are ongoing, considering factors like voter count, polling stations, electronic voting machines (EVMs), and manpower.

Waghmare led a video conference with district collectors to deliberate on preliminary preparations for elections to the Zilla Parishads, Panchayat Samitis, Municipal Councils, and Nagar Panchayats.

He mentioned that a distinct voter list for local body elections is unnecessary; instead, they will utilize the voter list compiled by the Election Commission of India. Preliminary discussions with the Election Commission of India have verified the availability of the voter list as of July 1, 2025.
