Key Takeaways
Dharamshala, January 3 (NationPress) The University Grants Commission (UGC) has acknowledged the tragic case involving the demise of a 19-year-old student from a college in Dharamshala. The student passed away on December 26, allegedly after suffering from health issues caused by ragging by four fellow students and sexual harassment by a professor.
In light of this incident, the UGC has established a fact-finding committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the student's death and the allegations against those implicated.
UGC officials confirmed the formation of this committee, stating, "The University Grants Commission has taken serious cognizance of this tragic event at a Dharamsala college. A fact-finding committee has been formed to ensure thorough examination. We assure that those responsible will face strict consequences; the safety of students is our top priority."
In the meantime, four students from a government college in Himachal Pradesh's Dharamshala have been charged with ragging related to this case.
A professor from the same institution is also facing charges of sexually harassing the female student, who tragically passed away on December 26.
The incident has garnered attention from the Himachal Pradesh Scheduled Castes Commission, which has requested a detailed report on the situation.
Kuldeep Kumar Dhiman, Chairman of the Scheduled Castes Commission, stated, "We have been informed of this matter and a report has been requested. Any form of discrimination will not be tolerated."
This case has sparked widespread outrage and raised concerns about the roles of both the college and police administration.
In connection with the incident, police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against four female students and a college professor.
However, controversy has arisen as the college administration has denied recognition of the deceased as a student of the institution for the current academic year.
This has led the victim's family and guardians to question the actions of both the college authorities and the police in managing this case.
After the death of 19-year-old Pallavi, who was associated with Dharamshala Degree College, serious accusations of ragging, sexual harassment, and mental torture have emerged.
Based on a complaint from the victim's father, Vikram Kumar, the Dharamshala police have registered a case under Sections 75, 115(2), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), which relate to sexual harassment, causing hurt, and common intention. The FIR also incorporates Section 3 of the Himachal Pradesh Educational Institutions (Prohibition of Ragging) Act, 2009.
Vikram further alleged that his daughter was subjected to casteist slurs and severe mental harassment.
