The police reported on Sunday that the body of a second-year student was discovered hanging in the hostel bathroom of this private medical college.
As per police sources, the student chose to take his own life after experiencing academic failure.
This unfortunate event occurred on Saturday night. Upon receiving the alert, Durgapur police promptly arrived at the scene and retrieved the body.
In relation to the incident, ACP Durgapur, Subir Roy, stated, "A complaint regarding unnatural death has been lodged. The deceased's body will be sent to Durgapur Subdistrict Hospital for an autopsy. The Durgapur police station has initiated an investigation into the matter."
The deceased has been identified as Lavanya Pratap (22), a second-year medical student at the private hospital.
Family sources reveal that Lavanya hailed from Patna, Bihar, and had been unable to pass a recent semester exam. Police are currently interviewing friends and classmates of the late student.
So far, the authorities of the private medical college hospital have not released any official statement regarding this incident.
According to police sources, the body is currently in the hospital morgue. The hospital has notified the student's family about the situation. Nevertheless, the incident has created a significant disturbance within the premises of the medical college since Sunday morning.
The student's father, Anil Kumar, shared with local media, "The exam results were not favorable. The review process had just begun, which may have led my son to make such an extreme decision."
However, authorities have indicated that any foul play concerning the death will only be determined after the autopsy report is received.
It is noteworthy that in 2025, a first-year medical student at this private medical college in Durgapur was reportedly gang raped in a wooded area outside the campus.
In that case, the police apprehended six individuals, including a classmate of the victim with whom she had gone out that evening. Charges of 'gang rape' were filed against all suspects.
