Mumbai, July 4 (NationPress) The Minister of Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Narhari Zirwal, informed the Maharashtra Assembly on Friday that the state government is poised to further enhance the food safety inspection system through various initiatives already in motion.
He highlighted that the government has bolstered the workforce in the FDA, empowered laboratories, optimized the involvement of private labs, and initiated checks on e-commerce activities. These measures are set to render the food safety inspection system more dynamic and efficient.
Zirwal was addressing a debate prompted by a calling attention motion from Shweta Mahale (BJP) and others, while receiving criticism from opposition members regarding the FDA’s performance.
The Minister noted that recent recruitment in the FDA has resulted in the appointment of 189 officers, whose training is currently in progress. The government aims to establish a dedicated laboratory for each department across the state and has resolved to expand laboratory facilities.
At present, three laboratories are operational, with the construction of three more underway. Additionally, to enhance food testing capabilities, private laboratories will be contracted.
A proposal has been drafted to incorporate private laboratories in food testing, pending approval from the Central government.
An inspection initiative in collaboration with the police will target the sale of gutkha and similar products near schools and colleges, alongside inspections of e-commerce platforms.
Regular actions are being undertaken against individuals and establishments involved in the production, sale, distribution, storage, and transportation of gutkha, pan masala, flavored tobacco, and related products within the state.
A complaint registration number, 1800-1800-365, has been launched for issues related to online food sales.
During operations conducted by the FDA from April 1, 2025, to May 31, 2025, prohibited food items valued at Rs 3.29 crore were confiscated in 53 cases, including the seizure of ten vehicles and the sealing of 14 establishments, as stated by the Minister.
