Was the Maharashtra Winter Session a Failure?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Nagpur, Dec 14 (NationPress) Opposition factions critiqued the Mahayuti administration on Sunday, asserting that the week-long Winter Session of the Maharashtra Legislature, which wrapped up on December 14, was a failed endeavor as it did not provide any substantial relief to farmers and the inhabitants of the Vidarbha area.
During a collective press briefing, Congress Legislative Party leader in the state Assembly, Vijay Wadettiwar, along with senior NCP (SP) member Jayant Patil, and Shiv Sena (UBT) legislative leader Bhaskar Jadhav, contended that the state government's primary aim during this session was to approve supplementary demands totaling Rs 75,286 crore and to launch various initiatives with an eye on the impending Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.
Legislator Bhaskar Jadhav from Shiv Sena (UBT) claimed that the Winter Session served mainly to facilitate government spending from the treasury in preparation for elections. “Some announcements were made for Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai, yet no announcements were made for Vidarbha. This session was a betrayal of the people of Vidarbha and was orchestrated with municipal elections in focus,” he stated.
Shiv Sena (UBT) member Sachin Ahir criticized the administration, highlighting its inaction despite numerous inquiries regarding various alleged corruption issues during the session.
“Farmers in Vidarbha, who cultivate paddy, soybean, and cotton, anticipated this session. The opposition called for a bonus for paddy and soybean producers, yet the government did not respond. The state grapples with a severe drug crisis, but the government has failed to implement effective measures to tackle it,” Wadettiwar stated.
Congress Legislative Council group leader Satej Patil noted that the session was filled with more slogans than actionable items. “While there was a demand to enhance the number of cotton procurement centers, no decisions were made. The treasury is empty, yet slogans abound. This is the reality of the Mahayuti government. The government has made so many promises that it will face a budgetary deficit to fulfill them,” he claimed.
Veteran NCP (SP) member Jayant Patil challenged Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ assertions that Maharashtra is excelling in attracting investments and signing numerous memoranda of understanding (MoUs). He alleged that the companies associated with these MoUs are not following through with actual investments in the state, leaving the unemployment crisis unresolved.
Furthermore, he pointed out that the opposition raised significant concerns regarding the law and order situation in the state, but the government failed to deliver substantial responses on the matter.
