Mumbai, June 4 (NationPress) Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has declared that a remarkable 10 crore trees are set to be planted across the state this year as part of the Harit Maharashtra, Samruddhi Maharashtra initiative aimed at enhancing the state's forest cover.
“The goal is to achieve the same target of planting 10 crore trees next year as well. This initiative can only flourish if it transforms into a people's movement, necessitating collective efforts,” he stated.
During the meeting, CM Fadnavis emphasized the critical role of tree planting in preserving environmental equilibrium.
“Maharashtra is at the forefront of expanding forest cover nationwide. The state has excelled in the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign, which aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision. To meet the objective of 33 percent deforestation reduction in Maharashtra, it's essential to actively pursue the Harit Maharashtra, Samruddhi Maharashtra campaign over the next two decades. In the past eight years, Maharashtra has successfully planted a significant number of trees, achieving previous targets of 33 crore and 50 crore trees. Hence, this year's target is within reach,” he added.
He advised that seedlings aged between one and three years should be utilized for planting, stressing the importance of ensuring the survival and growth of the trees. Furthermore, he suggested leveraging modern technologies like artificial intelligence to enhance survival rates and implementing transparency tools such as remote sensing and satellite technology.
“All departments must determine suitable locations and quality seedlings for the ten crore tree initiative. Local bodies and Zilla Parishads should actively engage in this tree planting effort. The collaboration of social organizations is also vital. A thriving nursery is critical for the success of this campaign, necessitating the establishment of nurseries to provide quality seedlings. Care should also be taken to ensure that private nurseries produce high-quality seedlings, with tree species selected based on regional conditions,” the Chief Minister advised.
He instructed that all available funds under 'CAMPA' should be fully utilized to support the tree planting initiative.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar noted that when planting trees along national and state highways, future road expansion should be taken into account.
“Indigenous and shade-providing species such as Jambhu, Bahava, Surangi, Peepal, Vad, Kadulimba, and Arjun should be prioritized in these areas. Different regions support diverse tree species. Planting decisions should reflect this. Departments like textiles and marketing should play an active role in this campaign,” he added.
Forest Minister Ganesh Naik confirmed that the forest department will oversee tree planting along highways and reiterated that CAMPA funds will be fully allocated to ensure the success of the ten crore tree initiative.
