Is Mahayuti Tension Rising? Shiv Sena's Dual Strategy Pressures BJP as Fadnavis Stays Cautious!
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Jan 21 (NationPress) The Mahayuti coalition in Maharashtra is experiencing notable internal discord, as Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena seems to be implementing a strategically complex dual approach to assert its influence over the BJP in local civic administrations. Recent political maneuvers in the Kalyan-Dombivli and Ulhasnagar municipal corporations have created a stir within the ruling alliance, leading Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to adopt a careful wait-and-see approach.
In a surprising twist, Shinde's Shiv Sena has garnered backing from the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) in Kalyan-Dombivli, effectively marginalizing the BJP.
By consolidating 62 seats, the Shinde faction is poised to gain power independently of its primary senior partner, the BJP. This development has not only pushed the BJP aside but has also dealt a strategic blow to Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT).
Similar strategies are unfolding in Ulhasnagar. Under the guidance of Shinde Sena MP Dr. Shrikant Shinde, the party is actively seeking the support of independent corporators and two representatives from the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA). With both the BJP and Shinde Sena currently tied at 37 seats each, Shinde aims to reach the crucial figure of 40 to install a Shiv Sena Mayor, potentially leaving the BJP in a precarious position.
Political analysts view these actions as a direct retaliation against recent developments in Ambernath and Badlapur. In Ambernath, the BJP reportedly collaborated with Congress corporators to secure the presidency, sidelining the Shinde faction. In response, Shinde allied with Ajit Pawar's NCP to secure the vice-presidency. The current assertive stance in KDMC is perceived as a strategic counteraction to the BJP’s earlier tactics.
Reacting to Shinde’s maneuvers, BJP leader Pravin Darekar issued a strong reminder of the party’s capabilities. “The BJP is a vast organization grounded in the populace. Political games by leaders are secondary to us,” he stated. He also warned, “Maharashtra understands what occurs when Devendra Fadnavis takes action. If he could politically outsmart Sharad Pawar, others should tread carefully before challenging him.”
The evolving situation has also prompted responses from the opposition. Sanjay Raut, a leader of Shiv Sena (UBT), labeled the happenings in Kalyan-Dombivli as unfortunate but hinted at possible future consequences for the Shinde-MNS coalition.
“Ultimately, the power in Maharashtra resides with Devendra Fadnavis. If he disapproves of these developments, those involved in this support drama might soon encounter a significant backlash (sase-mira),” Raut commented.
As the Mahayuti partners continue to vie for influence ahead of crucial local elections, Fadnavis’s cautious strategy indicates that the BJP may be gearing up for a counter-offensive. For the moment, Eknath Shinde’s dual approach of localized alliances has effectively placed the BJP on the defensive, marking a new chapter of pressure tactics within the ruling coalition.
