All India Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra faced organised protests on Tuesday while attending a party workers' conference in Chapra block of Nadia district, West Bengal, with her vehicle surrounded by black flags and her movement temporarily blocked. The incident has sharpened political tensions in the Krishnanagar parliamentary constituency, which Moitra represents.

What Happened in Chapra

Protesters surrounded Moitra's car with black flags as she attempted to leave the workers' conference venue. According to reports, she was unable to move even after boarding the vehicle. There were also allegations that attempts were made to vandalise the car, though these remain unverified. The incident triggered a spread of political tension across Nadia's Chapra area through the day.

Moitra's Accusations and Her Security Background

Speaking to the media after the incident, Mahua Moitra accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Trinamool Congress defectors of orchestrating the disruption. 'This chaos is being created with the help of party defectors and the BJP,' she said. She labelled leaders who left the Trinamool Congress as 'dishonest' and flagged punitive action taken against Zilla Parishad members for anti-party activities. She also strongly protested what she described as harassment of Trinamool workers through police and administrative pressure. This is not the first such incident for Moitra in her own constituency. She has reportedly faced protests and alleged attacks on multiple previous visits to Krishnanagar. Following earlier incidents, she approached the Calcutta High Court for security cover, which the court permitted — assigning two police personnel for her protection in the constituency.

The Workers' Conference and Organisational Agenda

Moitra described Tuesday's workers' meeting as 'successful and encouraging.' In the presence of MLAs from Palashipara and Jalangi, the conference adopted a strategy to revitalise the regional Trinamool organisation. The gathering was framed as part of a broader effort to consolidate the party's ground-level presence in Nadia ahead of future electoral cycles.

BJP's Counter-Allegations

Chapra BJP IT cell in-charge Gopal Das and local resident Ambarjit Roy alleged that Moitra herself is responsible for unrest, drug trade, and extortion politics in the Chapra area — claims Moitra has not addressed directly. BJP representatives also claimed that ordinary residents, not BJP workers, raised the black flags in protest against allegations that Moitra had insulted Hindu gods and goddesses, and that the party was not involved in any alleged attack on her vehicle.

With both sides trading accusations, the Chapra incident is likely to intensify the ongoing political standoff in Nadia district as the Trinamool Congress works to rebuild its organisational base in a constituency that has seen repeated friction.
