Aizawl, May 19 (NationPress) The Assam Rifles, in collaboration with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), have intercepted contraband valued at Rs 8.30 crore in Mizoram, officials disclosed on Monday.
A defense spokesperson reported that, acting on specific intelligence, the Assam Rifles and DRI officials confiscated poppy seeds worth Rs 7.40 crore and betel nuts valued at Rs 90 lakh from two warehouses in Vairengte, Mizoram, on Sunday.
Vairengte is situated near the Assam-Mizoram border.
The seized items have been transferred to the DRI in Aizawl, according to the spokesperson.
A senior official indicated that the poppy seeds and betel nuts (also referred to as Burmese Betel nuts) were smuggled from neighboring Myanmar.
Authorities suspect that these poppy seeds were meant for supply to Manipur, where illegal poppy farming is being conducted to provide raw materials to drug manufacturing entities.
The police in Manipur, along with other security forces, have been consistently eradicating illegal poppy cultivation in the hilly forest regions.
Mizoram's Chief Minister Lalduhoma recently highlighted that local growers are facing significant challenges in selling their produce at competitive prices due to the illegal import of areca nuts from Myanmar. While addressing a training seminar on 'Scientific Methods of Cultivation of Areca Nut and Pest Management', he stressed that the government is actively working to resolve these issues. He announced an allocation of Rs 7.43 crore by the North Eastern Council (NEC) for setting up processing units for areca nuts at Chemphai and Zamuang. He stated that these facilities will ensure the proper processing of areca nuts, create value-added products, and enhance marketing opportunities.
Lalduhoma further emphasized the need for effective resource utilization to boost productivity and economic advantages for farmers.
