Kolkata, July 4 (NationPress) On this solemn day marking the death anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, West Bengal's Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee conveyed a significant political message urging the citizens to embrace Swamiji’s tenet of the “religion of humanity”, which transcends the limitations of religious affiliations, caste, and social class.

Referring to Swamiji as a remarkable “monk-patriot”, the Chief Minister elaborated on the continued relevance of his teachings on universal brotherhood and peace in today's context.

“The Hinduism that Swamiji cherished aligns with my beliefs – it teaches that the religion of humanity is paramount. Inspired by Swami Vivekananda’s principles, I hope that individuals in Bengal, and across the nation, irrespective of their religion, caste, or class, will show mutual respect and love – that is my aspiration,” CM Mamata Banerjee stated in a message shared on her official X account.

Political analysts interpret the Chief Minister's call for the people of West Bengal to adopt the teachings of Swamiji as a nuanced response to the BJP’s persistent claims regarding alleged injustices faced by Hindus in the state.

In her communication, the Chief Minister also highlighted her government’s efforts to preserve and promote the legacies of both Swamiji and his disciple, Margaret Elizabeth Noble, known as Sister Nivedita.

“Throughout my life, I have been dedicated to Swami Vivekananda’s cause. The monks and nuns of the Mission are aware of my humble contributions to ensure that Swamiji’s residence and Sister Nivedita’s abode are entrusted to the Ramakrishna Mission and Ramakrishna Sarada Mission. I have also initiated efforts to acquire two properties associated with Sister Nivedita – one in Bagbazar, Kolkata, and another in Darjeeling. Moreover, the state government allocates an annual grant for the museum at Swamiji’s residence,” the Chief Minister affirmed.

The state BJP leadership, however, contended that while the Chief Minister promotes Swamiji’s rich philosophical teachings, monks face harassment. A BJP state committee member remarked, “Padma Shree awardee monk Kartik Maharaj, affiliated with the Murshidabad unit of Bharat Sevashram Sangha, has been wrongly implicated in a false rape case. As the 2024 Lok Sabha elections approach, she has even accused certain monks from the Swamiji-founded Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission of being politically biased against her.”
