Agartala, Feb 10 (NationPress) A 25-year-old individual from Manipur was apprehended by Customs in the bordering district of Khowai, Tripura, while attempting to smuggle four sophisticated foreign-made pistols into Bangladesh, as reported by officials on Monday.
According to an official statement, acting on a tip-off, Customs officials detained the arms dealer identified as Dangshua Mulji (25) in Khowai district, along the India-Bangladesh border, on Sunday night.
Mulji had traveled to Tripura by train from Guwahati and was intercepted at Singicherra border village while wandering near the India-Bangladesh border.
The authorities recovered four sophisticated pistols (32mm and 9mm) manufactured in Russia, the US, and India, along with 150 bullets and five magazines from his possession.
Customs officials, currently interrogating the suspect, believe he is associated with a transnational syndicate engaged in arms and narcotics smuggling. This seizure occurred just three weeks after Tripura Police arrested three individuals—one from Bangladesh and two from Bihar—with sophisticated weapons.
On January 24, a police team conducted a raid at a hotel in Dharmanagar, a commercial town in northern Tripura, arresting two individuals identified as Niraj Kumar (20) and Indal Mukhia (35).
The duo, originally from Bihar, had a sophisticated revolver and ammunition in their possession. During interrogation, they confessed to coming to Tripura to sell the weapon.
On January 21, police apprehended a Bangladeshi national with firearms and both Indian and Bangladeshi currencies after raiding a residence in Milanchakra Adarshapalli, located on the outskirts of the capital city.
The arrested individual was identified as Samajpriya Chakma, a resident of Khagrachari district in the southeastern region of Bangladesh. Authorities seized a loaded 9mm pistol, cartridges, 25,000 Bangladeshi Taka, Rs 2.21 lakh Indian currency, and two smartphones from his possession.
Tripura is bordered by Bangladesh on three sides, with certain areas still unfenced due to ongoing local disputes regarding land and demarcation.
Last year, the BSF arrested 55 Rohingyas, 620 Bangladeshi nationals, and 260 Indian nationals, including individuals involved in human trafficking, during various operations.
