Chandigarh, Aug 7 (NationPress) – In a significant intelligence-driven operation, the Punjab Police apprehended four individuals in Amritsar linked to cross-border arms trafficking, seizing a total of seven advanced pistols, as disclosed by Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav on Thursday.
The individuals arrested have been identified as Akashdeep Singh, known as Akash (20), from Daoke village in Amritsar, Ramanpreet Singh (23) from Bagha Kalan village in Amritsar, Pratap Singh (25) from Sur Singh village in Ferozepur, and Sarbjit Singh, also called Babbal (25), from Debi Wala Bazaar in Amritsar.
The seized firearms include two 9MM PX5, two 9MM Glock, and three .30 bore pistols.
DGP Yadav indicated that the suspects maintained contact with smugglers based in Pakistan and have been receiving illegal arms shipments near the India-Pakistan border.
The suspects were operating from villages near the border and were further supplying weapons to local gangsters within the state.
The DGP noted that ongoing investigations are focused on establishing connections in this case to fully unravel the network involved.
Detailing the operation, Commissioner of Police (Amritsar) Gurpreet Singh Bhullar mentioned that, in light of heightened security protocols ahead of Independence Day, police teams acted on specific intelligence inputs, leading to the arrest of Akash and Raman in the jurisdiction of Chheharta police station, where four pistols were recovered — two PX5 9mm and two .30 bore.
Subsequently, their accomplices Pratap Singh and Sarbjeet Singh were also apprehended in the same region, with three additional pistols confiscated from them.
According to Bhullar, Akash resides close to the international border and, along with Raman, was responsible for receiving arms shipments from across the border, while their associates handled the distribution.
This operation has successfully averted a major criminal threat in the area, with Bhullar suggesting that further arrests and recoveries are anticipated in the near future.
