Agartala, Jan 25 (NationPress) In anticipation of the upcoming Republic Day festivities, authorities in Tripura detained two individuals from Bihar who were found in possession of a sophisticated revolver, according to reports released on Saturday. A police spokesperson revealed that a team, acting on confidential intel, conducted a raid at a hotel located in the commercial hub of Dharmanagar, which borders southern Assam, leading to the arrest of the two suspects identified as Niraj Kumar (20) and Indal Mukhia (35) on Friday evening. The preliminary investigation indicated that the detainees admitted to traveling to Tripura with the intent to sell the firearm.
“Further questioning is underway to uncover additional information regarding the arms trade,” the official stated.
This seizure of arms occurred just four days after Tripura Police apprehended a Bangladeshi individual on January 21, who was found with firearms and both Indian and Bangladeshi currency during a raid at a residence in Milanchakra Adarshapalli, situated on the outskirts of the capital.
The arrested Bangladeshi, identified as Samajpriya Chakma, hails from the Khagrachari district in the Chittagong Hill Tracts region of Bangladesh. Authorities confiscated a loaded 9 mm pistol, several cartridges, 25,000 Bangladeshi Taka, and Rs 2.21 lakh in Indian currency, along with two smartphones from his possession.
With Republic Day celebrations approaching on Sunday, the Border Security Force (BSF) and other security agencies have heightened security measures along the India-Bangladesh border and in sensitive areas of the state in recent days.
A spokesperson for the BSF remarked that following the unrest in Bangladesh last year, the BSF has escalated its operations and patrolling along the 856-km India-Bangladesh border in Tripura to thwart infiltration, exfiltration, and cross-border offenses, including smuggling.
“Security along the India-Bangladesh border has been reinforced to avert any form of cross-border infiltration and unlawful activities,” the spokesperson added.
Tripura is bordered by Bangladesh on three sides, with certain areas remaining unfenced due to ongoing local disputes over land and demarcation issues. Last year, the BSF apprehended 55 Rohingyas, 620 Bangladeshi nationals, and 260 Indian citizens involved in various criminal activities.
