Agartala, Feb 22 (NationPress) In a major operation against smuggling, Assam Rifles, in conjunction with Customs officials, apprehended two individuals and confiscated gold worth ₹1.02 crore in Tripura, as reported by officials.

A Defence spokesperson stated that following actionable intelligence, the para-military forces, along with Customs agents, detained two youths traveling by auto and seized 14 gold bars and ornaments totaling 1.15 kg, valued at ₹1.02 crore.

The arrests took place in Badharghat, located on the outskirts of the capital city, as the youth were en route to the Agartala railway station to catch a train out of the state.

“Acting on specific intelligence, the collaborative team of Assam Rifles and Customs officials carried out the operation effectively and seized the gold while detaining the two individuals,” she elaborated, noting that both the confiscated gold and the accused were handed over to the Customs authorities for further action.

This operation highlights Assam Rifles’ ongoing initiatives to combat illicit activities in border regions, as Tripura, which shares an 856 km border with Bangladesh, is a significant route for smuggling various items, including drugs, gold, arms, and other contraband.

These illegal goods are often trafficked from Myanmar, entering Tripura through Mizoram and southern Assam before being moved into Bangladesh.

In a distinct operation on Sunday, Assam Rifles, along with Customs officials, seized substantial amounts of ganja (marijuana) and other illicit items valued at approximately ₹10.29 crore and arrested two individuals in Tripura.

The Defence spokesperson confirmed that during a significant crackdown on narcotics smuggling, the troops and Customs officials jointly confiscated 2286.9 kg of marijuana estimated at ₹10.29 crore from Bejoynagar village in West Tripura district.

Two individuals were also arrested in connection with the ganja seizure, which was discovered in a plantation field.

The confiscated ganja and the arrested suspects were turned over to Customs for further legal proceedings. This successful operation is part of the continuing efforts by Assam Rifles to counter illicit activities along the borders and maintain national security, the spokesperson emphasized.
