Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Imphal, April 7 (NationPress) On Tuesday evening, Manipur's Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh convened an all-party meeting to assess the ongoing situation in the state following a tragic bomb explosion in Bishnupur district that resulted in the deaths of two young children and left their mother injured.
An official from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) indicated that the meeting focused on the heartbreaking event that occurred in Tronglaobi Awang Leikai village, where the leaders condemned the act as a cowardly assault.
Political representatives voiced significant concern regarding the worsening law and order situation, stressing the immediate need to uphold peace, unity, and communal harmony.
Cross-party leaders exchanged insights and pledged complete support in efforts to restore stability.
The gathering at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat concluded with a resolution to urgently identify and apprehend those accountable for the attack, insisting on strict legal action. They also collectively urged the public to maintain calm, avoid any form of protest or violence, such as vandalism, and cooperate with law enforcement to sustain order.
Attendees included leaders from numerous political factions, such as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), its allies like the National People's Party (NPP) and Naga People's Front (NPF), and opposition groups, including the Congress, Communist Party of India (CPI), NPP (TL), and the Republican Party of India (Athawale).
Prominent figures, including former Chief Minister and current state Congress President Okram Ibobi Singh and former Deputy Chief Minister Y. Joykumar Singh, were also present.
Earlier, the Chief Minister announced that the investigation into the Bishnupur bomb incident would be handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
The devastating event occurred around 1 a.m. when a powerful explosive device, suspected to be launched by Kuki militants, struck a residence.
A five-year-old boy and his five-month-old sister lost their lives instantly, while their mother sustained injuries. Reports indicate that the family was asleep at the time of the blast, which also caused significant damage to their home.
In a bid to prevent further violence, the Manipur government has suspended internet and mobile data services, including broadband, for three days across five districts in the Imphal Valley: Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur.
Officials stated that this suspension was essential to mitigate the spread of misinformation and help maintain law and order. Furthermore, an indefinite curfew has been imposed in Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, and Kakching due to widespread protests concerning the loss of the two children.
District Magistrates from the aforementioned areas have issued separate curfew orders starting Tuesday.
In another development, a police official reported that two protesters died and three others were injured when a mob attacked a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp in Bishnupur on Tuesday.
A significant crowd, including many women, gathered for a large protest condemning the bombing that claimed the lives of the two children in Tronglaobi Awang Leikai village.
Reports suggest that the protesters stormed the CRPF camp near Gelmol, just a few hundred meters from the blast site, setting vehicles ablaze and damaging property.
