Meghalaya CM lays foundation for ₹140-crore road in South West Khasi Hills
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday, 17 August laid the foundation stone for the ₹140-crore upgradation of the Weiloi-Mawkyrwat-Rangthong road in South West Khasi Hills, describing the corridor as a catalyst for tourism, agriculture, trade, and access to essential services. The project is financed entirely through state government resources — with no central funding — marking a significant commitment to self-funded regional development.
What the Project Covers
The upgraded road will connect communities across one of Meghalaya's more remote districts, improving the movement of agricultural produce and opening new avenues for tourism-linked businesses. Officials said the improved corridor is expected to cut travel time and logistics costs for farmers, entrepreneurs, and residents seeking healthcare and education facilities.
What the Chief Minister Said
Addressing a gathering at Mawkyrwat, Sangma framed the project as part of a broader equity agenda. 'Our vision has always been clear — no area, no district should be left behind. Development must begin from the most remote corners and reach every village,' he said. He added that better roads were not merely a physical infrastructure question but a direct lever for improving quality of life.
'Meghalaya is beyond Shillong. Our responsibility is to ensure that every district, every village, receives equal attention and opportunity,' Sangma said, signalling that the state government intends to continue prioritising districts outside the capital.
Cumulative Investment in South West Khasi Hills
Sangma noted that projects worth more than ₹850 crore have been implemented in South West Khasi Hills since 2018, with cumulative commitments now approaching ₹990 crore — spanning roads, drinking water, education, healthcare, and tourism infrastructure. He also said that more than 3,200 km of roads have been built across Meghalaya over the past eight years, averaging nearly one kilometre per day.
Officials Present
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Tourism Minister Timothy D. Shira, and MLAs Renikton Lyngdoh, Piyush Marwein, Olan Singh Suin, and Celestine Lyngdoh attended the foundation-stone ceremony at Mawkyrwat.
What to Watch Next
With cumulative state investment in South West Khasi Hills nearing the ₹990-crore mark, the pace of execution on the Weiloi-Mawkyrwat-Rangthong corridor will be closely watched as a test of the government's 'leave no district behind' pledge. Completion timelines and tendering details are yet to be announced publicly.
