The new Secretariat is set to rise on a sprawling 53-acre site, with an anticipated expenditure of ₹ 1188 crore. The Secretariat and Directorate complex within the New Shillong administrative township will be developed in two distinct phases. This complex will feature 68 offices, an auditorium with a capacity for 700 individuals, and facilities for 1829 staff members, as per an official statement.
The laying of the new secretariat’s foundation on the 53rd Statehood Day is a testament to the government's resolve to enhance and expedite the development of infrastructure throughout the state.
In his address during the foundation-laying ceremony, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma stated, “This is not merely a structure; it represents the evolution of Shillong.”
He described the emerging administrative and knowledge hub in New Shillong as a ‘growth centre’, asserting, “As we invest in this Secretariat, and in the various roads linking the existing city to this new administrative area, we are setting the groundwork for the community, the people, and the landowners to transform this entire new Shillong into a significant growth centre for our state.”
Moreover, he revealed that the government has already earmarked a staggering ₹ 5500 crore investment for the New Shillong region, with an additional ₹ 10,000 crore investment on the horizon.
“This investment will radically change new Shillong city,” he emphasized, noting that the Secretariat building will serve as a catalyst to propel our dreams forward.
“This is more than just a secretariat; it symbolizes our collective aspirations as a government and as a state, daring to dream big. It embodies the hope we wish to instill in the people of our state,” he added.
Addressing those who may question the need for a new secretariat, the Chief Minister remarked, “Our focus is not solely on future infrastructure but also on equally prioritizing social sectors.”
“Our flagship initiatives aimed at youths, farmers, and women are pivotal in enhancing the living standards of our citizens. The state’s overall economy is experiencing a renewed momentum, fostering growth and development. Our government is committed to the holistic advancement of our state,” concluded the Chief Minister.
