Shillong, Feb 17 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Meghalaya and President of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), Conrad K. Sangma, addressed the challenges faced by residents along the India-Bangladesh border on Monday. He emphasized that only a capable leader could effectively tackle their issues.
Several hundred villages in seven districts of Meghalaya are situated along the 443 km border with Bangladesh.
Sangma highlighted that the forthcoming elections for the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) present an opportunity for these communities to elect a leader who would act as their representative and bridge the gap between the government and the people.
“Elected council members will not only represent the communities in these councils but will also facilitate connections with the government,” the Chief Minister stated during an election rally for the KHADC at Dalia, approximately 95 km from Shillong.
Encouraging voters to choose NPP candidate Ethan Kharpuri after listening to various speakers at the meeting, Sangma remarked: “To tackle these challenges, we require a strong leader who comprehends our struggles and can address them effectively. Let’s utilize the KHADC election to support our party candidate.”
Intense campaigning is underway for the elections to the KHADC and JHADC, scheduled for February 21.
Vote counting will take place on February 24.
Sangma reiterated his earlier commitment to connect Shella with Sohra via an all-weather road, which has now been completed.
“The NPP stands for inclusive development. We have pledged to the people of Meghalaya to launch welfare initiatives and promote the holistic development of all communities. The state's progress hinges on the well-being of its citizens. We are devoted to addressing issues in education, healthcare, and infrastructure development. Our party focuses on improving the lives of farmers and creating opportunities for youth and women. We are committed to the comprehensive development of Meghalaya,” he added.
Addressing the difficulties encountered in acquiring voter identity cards, especially in border regions, he stated that the NPP government has resolved this concern. “We believe that all citizens, regardless of their location, should have access to the rights and privileges of this nation.”
“Do not be swayed by political parties that criticize us. We are part of the ruling government, and post-election, all parties will depend on the NPP to address their concerns. Respond with your votes and affirm that we are not intimidated by their remarks,” the Chief Minister advised.
Sangma mentioned that after 50 years, the NPP has made history again, currently boasting 32 MLAs in the 60-member Assembly, thereby forming a full-majority government.
“We do not require support from other political parties, but we remain loyal to our coalition partners. A true leader never forsakes their people,” he emphasized. The BJP is one of the allies in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government led by Chief Minister Sangma, holding two MLAs.
