Shillong, June 24 (NationPress) A prominent leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), James Syiemiong, has formally requested the Meghalaya government to establish a 'Raja Memorial Viewpoint' in Sohra (Cherrapunji), located in the East Khasi Hills district. This viewpoint is envisioned as a significant landmark for both tourism and awareness.
The tragic story began when Raja Raghuvanshi, a 28-year-old transport entrepreneur from Indore, married Sonam Raghuvanshi, 24, on May 11. The couple arrived in Meghalaya for their honeymoon on May 20.
However, they were reported missing on May 23. Subsequently, Raja's dismembered body was discovered on June 2, concealed in a deep gorge near a waterfall in the Sohra area. Reports indicate that he was brutally murdered by three assailants wielding machetes near a parking lot adjacent to the well-known Weisawdong Falls on the same day the couple vanished.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) from the Meghalaya Police has made eight arrests related to the murder, including the victim's wife, Sonam, and her supposed lover, Raj Singh Kushwaha, 21.
In his correspondence to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Syiemiong emphasized the need to develop the 'Raja Memorial Viewpoint' at or near the site linked to this tragic incident.
The proposed memorial aims not only to honor Raja and his family but also to act as a tourist attraction, drawing visitors from across India who wish to pay their respects. Syiemiong remarked, "The memorial viewpoint has the potential to serve as a civic education hub, raising awareness about women's safety, tourist security, and moral responsibility."
The Meghalaya SIT has apprehended eight individuals involved in this shocking murder case, hailing from Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. The list of accused includes Anand Singh Kurmi, Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, Lokendra Singh Tomar, Silome James, and Balla Ahirwar, along with Sonam and her alleged partner Raj Singh Kushwaha.
All suspects are currently in the custody of the Meghalaya Police and face judicial proceedings.
