Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jammu, March 17 (NationPress) The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of Jammu and Kashmir apprehended an electric department meter reader on Tuesday for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 30,000 in the Rajouri district.
A representative of the ACB confirmed that the meter reader, identified as Arif Iqbal and stationed in PDD Rajouri, was caught in the act while soliciting a bribe from a complainant in return for lowering an inflated electricity bill.
The ACB has filed a case against Iqbal, as documented in FIR No. 03/2026 at PS ACB Rajouri under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (amended in 2018), on 17.03.2026.
The complainant reported that he had operated a tyre shop from 2019 until its closure in 2021 and had been consistently paying his electricity bills. In February 2026, he received an electricity bill for the duration from 31.12.2025 to 31.01.2026, totaling Rs 2,497.
According to the complaint, Iqbal approached him and requested Rs 50,000, assuring that he would handle the bill. The complainant insisted on payment based solely on the meter reading.
Subsequently, the meter reader allegedly threatened to raise the bill.
On 05.03.2026, Iqbal returned, delivering a new bill for the period from 31.01.2026 to 28.02.2026, amounting to Rs 1,53,890, with a due date of 27.03.2026.
When questioned regarding the inflated amount, Iqbal again demanded Rs 50,000 to have it adjusted.
The requested amount was later negotiated down to Rs 30,000. Since the complainant was unwilling to pay the bribe, he submitted a formal complaint to the ACB Rajouri for legal recourse.
Following the registration of the case, a trap team from ACB PS Rajouri was formed.
The team apprehended Iqbal red-handed while he was demanding and accepting the Rs 30,000 bribe.
He was arrested immediately, and searches were also conducted at his residence in Rajouri. The ACB spokesperson indicated that further investigations are ongoing.
