ACB arrests Jaipur civic engineer in ₹80,000 bribery trap
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Monday, 29 June 2026 arrested Sanjay Kumar Bairwa, a Junior Engineer posted with the Deputy Commissioner, Civil Lines Zone, Jaipur Municipal Corporation, while he was allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹80,000 inside his parked vehicle in Jaipur. The arrest followed a meticulously planned trap operation after weeks of verification by the ACB's Outpost SU-I, Jaipur.
How the Bribery Demand Escalated
The case originated when a complainant applied to the Jaipur Municipal Corporation (Civil Lines Zone) for permission to demolish a dilapidated house and build a new structure. After nearly four months, the property's seal was lifted and construction was approved for a basement, ground floor, and first floor.
On 3 June 2026, accused Sanjay Kumar Bairwa, accompanied by Deendayal, a Class IV employee, allegedly visited the construction site and threatened to reseal the property and halt work. The duo reportedly demanded ₹2 lakh — purportedly on behalf of Bairwa and the then Deputy Commissioner Sunil Bairwa — in exchange for allowing construction to continue unobstructed.
ACB Verification and Trap Operation
Following the complaint, the ACB conducted discreet verification. On 4 June 2026, a bribe demand of ₹1 lakh by Sanjay Kumar Bairwa was confirmed. Co-accused Deendayal allegedly collected ₹20,000 as a partial payment during this phase. Bairwa allegedly continued pressuring the complainant to pay the remaining balance, threatening to seal his father's property if the demand was not met.
A trap operation was subsequently planned and executed by Police Inspector Archana Meena under the supervision of Deputy Inspector General of Police Dr Rameshwar Singh and led by Additional Superintendent of Police Prashant Kaushik.
The Arrest: Cash Found in Car Dashboard
During the trap on Monday, Sanjay Kumar Bairwa allegedly instructed the complainant to place ₹80,000 in the dashboard compartment near the gear lever of his Maruti Fox vehicle (Registration No. RJ-60-CH-1901). The ACB team recovered the full amount from the compartment. A chemical test of the area returned a positive pink-colour reaction, confirming contact with the pre-treated currency notes. An additional ₹27,400 in cash was recovered from Bairwa's wallet for further verification.
Investigation and Legal Proceedings
According to Director General of the ACB, Govind Gupta, preliminary investigation has established that the complainant's official work was pending with the accused at the time of the arrest. Bairwa is currently under interrogation, with proceedings supervised by Additional Director General of Police Smita Srivastava and Inspector General of Police S. Parimala. A case is being registered under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The ACB has urged citizens to report corruption through its toll-free helpline 1064 or WhatsApp helpline 9413502834, both available round the clock. The investigation is ongoing, and further developments are expected as interrogation continues.
