Puri, July 19 (NationPress) In a shocking event in Odisha, a minor girl was set on fire by three unidentified perpetrators in the Balanga police station area of Puri district, according to police reports on Saturday. The victim has endured severe injuries, with 70% of her body burned, and has been transferred to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for urgent medical care.
Authorities are actively investigating the case and have promised to pursue the culprits with full force.
SP Pinak Mishra informed reporters, "This morning, we received reports regarding a minor girl who had been assaulted by several individuals, where a flammable substance was used to ignite her. She has been sent to AIIMS Odisha for her safety and treatment after being rescued."
"We are fully aware of this incident. If any individuals are linked to this heinous act, they will face stringent consequences. Our investigation is thorough and examines multiple aspects of the case," he added.
A relative of the victim expressed their horror to the press, demanding justice against those responsible for such brutality. "The girl is like a sister to me. We were devastated upon hearing the news through media outlets. It was hard for anyone in our village to believe that such an event occurred," he stated.
The relative recounted the victim’s words during her critical state, explaining that she was en route to return a book to a friend when three unknown assailants dragged her to the riverside, doused her in petrol, and ignited her.
"They rendered her unconscious after dragging her to the riverside. We are unaware of what transpired while she was unconscious. Upon regaining consciousness, she realized she was aflame and miraculously sought help from a nearby residence," he said.
"Her condition is dire, and she struggles to communicate. Her body has suffered extensive burns. Doctors have indicated that her situation is grave," he added.
The family learned of the incident approximately 30 minutes after it occurred, and the victim was swiftly taken from the village to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for treatment.
"We demand justice. The authorities must ensure that those responsible face severe penalties. This incident has profoundly disturbed us. If such violence can transpire in broad daylight, no girl is truly safe," the relative added, calling for increased safety measures and support from officials.
This tragic case follows closely behind the death of a 20-year-old college student who set herself ablaze in protest against the inaction regarding her sexual harassment complaint against her college's Head of Department (HoD). The second-year Integrated B.Ed student from Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College in Balasore suffered 95% burns after immolating herself on Saturday and died from her injuries on Monday at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, igniting extensive outrage and political condemnation across the state.
