Puri, July 19 (NationPress) In a disturbing event that has sent shockwaves through Odisha's Puri district, a minor girl was allegedly set on fire by unknown assailants close to a river embankment in Balanga.
The horrific attack, which occurred on July 19, has prompted immediate police action, leading to the establishment of a Special Investigation Team (SIT).
As per the complaint filed by the victim's mother, Mahmuda Bibi of Nuagopalpur village, the girl was reportedly confronted by unidentified individuals who drenched her in petrol and kerosene in a vicious attempt on her life.
Fortunately, she managed to escape and sought safety at a nearby home.
Local villagers acted quickly, transporting the victim to the Pipili Community Health Centre before she was transferred to AIIMS Bhubaneswar due to the critical nature of her burn injuries.
The police have documented Malanga PS Case No. 162/2025 under sections 127(2), 109, 123, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Forensic and K9 teams have meticulously searched the crime scene, while senior officials oversee the evidence gathering process.
Balanga IIC Shri Dibya Ranjan Panda is leading the SIT, which is dedicated to accelerating the investigation and identifying the perpetrators.
Authorities have assured that strict action will be taken, vowing to deliver justice for the survivor.
Former Odisha Chief Minister and BJD president Naveen Patnaik has criticized the BJP government over the surge in crimes against women in the state and condemned this appalling incident.
On X, Patnaik expressed, "Deeply pained to learn that a young girl was set ablaze in the Balanga area of Puri District. This attempt to murder her occurred in broad daylight. I vehemently condemn this dreadful act."
He further noted, "This incident follows closely on the heels of a tragic event involving a young girl who self-immolated at FM College after being denied justice, even after exhausting all avenues, and a month after a horrific occurrence in Gopalpur."
Patnaik emphasized that such unimaginable acts of violence against women are now alarmingly frequent across Odisha. "These are not isolated incidents. The shocking frequency of such events indicates a profound failure of governance. It appears that criminals feel emboldened under the current administration and are not afraid of punishment," he argued.
The former Chief Minister asserted that these incidents demonstrate that Odisha is becoming increasingly unsafe for women due to governmental inaction and political complicity.
"Will the Odisha Government awaken from this deep slumber and take swift action to ensure that the criminals are apprehended? More importantly, will the government respond to prevent such incidents from recurring? The daughters and women of Odisha are awaiting an answer," he added.
